Hospice hits a home run

Bids exceed $300,000 at Labor Day auction

Amazing things happen at Hospice of Lancaster County’s annual Labor Day auction in Lampeter.

On Monday, at the 23rd annual sale, a regular sheet cake sold for more than $1,500. A man bought an autographed baseball for an exorbitant amount of money, then gave it back to the auctioneer to resell. He ended up losing it.

Later, a woman repurchased her own full-length fur coat for $4,000-plus after donating it to the auction for bidding.

There was a full-sized canoe standing in for a salad bar in the food tent, and later, a 2007 Pontiac Solstice up for raffle, full of Amish boys dazed like everyone else by the flash of the the silver convertible.

The auction was hours from being over – organizers hadn’t even drawn the winner of the Solstice yet – when veteran auction chair Tom Buter interrupted bidding to announce to the crowd that they had already surpassed last year’s $287,000 total and had topped $300,000.

No little part of that was a new auction this year. Bidders interested in sports memorabilia used to have to sit through hours of paintings, gift baskets and jewelry for the occasional signed ballcap to come up.

This year, those items were broken out into their own auction under their own tent. There was no shortage of bidders for scores of autographed items collected by the volunteer trio of Ed Flick, Bobby Brandt and Bob Muschlitz.

“If we’re ever in the right place at the right time to get autographs, we think of Hospice,” said Muschlitz, whose late wife used Hospice services before her 1997 death.

Muschlitz said he thought it would take about two hours to auction everything the three men had collected over the past year. But lengthy bidding wars kept it going for nearly four hours.

“The stuff went at great prices, and there was really good variety,” said one wishful bidder named Jeff, who declined to give his last name or indulge his urge to bid.

“I couldn’t. … My wife would have killed me,” he said. “I see something and I was like, “Wow! Well, maybe … well, no. Some of that stuff went for $800 apiece.”

Plenty of bidders got good deals. Chuck Shaffner of Hummelstown said he picked up a set of golf clubs and two dozen golf balls for a mere $25 – bought at a store, he would have laid out hundreds.

“You have to be really alert, though,” Shaffner said. “They started pretty slow, but now they’re knocking things off pretty quickly.”

Hospice serves clients at the end of life, both in their homes and at its center on Good Drive, regardless of their ability to pay.

How someone came to know the organization is part of many answers at the auction, no matter what the question.

Shaffner’s wife, he said, used Hospice’s services before she died in 2004. “They were wonderful,” he said.

Others just know the Hospice auction is a good time. If there’s a good deal in it, that’s even better. At times, three tents feature simultaneous auctions, and those pounding the gavel have their own entertaining style:

“Ma’am? Just put up your number, and I’ll tell you what to pay,” one especially engaging Amish auctioneer told a bidder.

He also had his high-pressure tactic:

“Ma’am? Is $40 really too much to ask for that lovely painting?” he said, staring her down from his raised podium.

“Sir, we’ll make out a lot better if you ask me instead of her, OK?” he said to a bidder who paused to consult with his wife on upping a bid.

This auction has come a long way. Twenty-three years ago, Larry Newhouser had an idea – hold a simple, one-time auction at Willow Street fire hall as a way to raise some cash for Hospice and memorialize his mother-in-law.

Ron McBrearity was there. He’s volunteered at every single auction since.

“Nobody believed then that it would ever get this big,” McBrearity said, looking at a network of volunteers through which items travel before hitting the block, including one person who photographs the items so they can shown on overhead screens during bidding

As Edward Tufte says, ?audiences are fragile; respect them?.

One last sad truth about bad design is that so many people who are frustrated by things that don?t work think it?s their fault! When people don?t understand what they?re told, or audiences don?t understand what they see on the screen, they often blame themselves ? they believe that they?re either stupid or slow or perhaps they simply learn in other ways.

Ask yourself: Do your presentations have a less-than-evident ?operating system?? Before someone can get your message (the function of your presentation) do they first have to learn and comprehend your design?

Your main goal when designing a presentation should be to keep your audience?s attention on your idea, your pitch, your proposal—your message. They should never be distracted by, or even really aware of, your design. Dazzling them with bells and whistles will help them remember the bells and whistles, not your message.

After riding it for some

August 30, 2010 - 11:36 pm No Comments

After riding it for some time you will also discover that it is also very resistant and it loves air stunting! A good feature is TEKTRO brakes; the frame and the tires are not bad either. The bike is pretty similar to GT interceptor but some may find it?s got some paints from GT Vertigo too. The only considerable weakness that you might find on this bike is that it doesn?t come with chain tensors. Other than that, the bike is really good and the price is very affordable.

Jumping on the other side now, Mongoose would have no choice in this stiff competition but to come up with a serious weapon, the Mongoose Brawler. The first things that will catch your eye about this bike are the excellent frame and the front forks. The brakes and the crank are pretty good too. A weakness about this bike is that the other parts (such as sprocket, hub and rims) are not very satisfying.

Oil change intervals are another strategy to

August 30, 2010 - 10:17 am No Comments

Oil change intervals are another strategy to reduce the need for disposal, as with petroleum. Petroleum oil users are under the Oil Change Interval requirement by most dealers to change their oils every 5,000 kms. Driving forty thousand kms. or one year, whichever comes first, before changing oil will make an impact on reduced demands on the environment. That has been my experience with a product options available by Amsoil Inc. using six litres and a couple of oil filters with synthetic lubricant instead of more than forty litres of petroleum and sixteen oil and air filters.

Propylene Glycol Antifreeze is also something car owners should use to reduce environmental pollution because, compared to ethylene glycol, it is not toxic not lethal when ingested by pets, fish of any living animal.

We have the sensation that we are

August 29, 2010 - 11:03 pm No Comments

We have the sensation that we are running quicker because of the increased effort, but are we using our energy efficiently?

The next time you want to increase your speed try the following method. Initially, when you have decided to quicken the pace, observe what you normally do to achieve this. After a minute, slow down to a comfortable jogging pace and again think about raising the pace. This time do not think about running faster but instead just move your arms quicker. If we think of only moving the arms faster, requiring less energy, the legs will match the speed. Try the exercise and experience the difference. The first time you speed up you will use your usual habitual method, the second will feel different because it will be unfamiliar.

A recent study at Harvard University titled: ?Faster top running speeds are achieved with greater ground forces not more rapid leg movements?, Weyand et al (2000) found that runners reach faster speeds not by repositioning their legs more rapidly in the air but by other means. Head of research, Peter Weyand explains: – When you see someone running at top speed, his or her legs and arms are swinging all over the place.

Before using a glucose monitor the diabetic

August 29, 2010 - 10:11 pm No Comments

Before using a glucose monitor the diabetic patient will be educated in how to use this equipment and of course how often to do the checking. It is extremely important to have been taught this as misusing or misreading these measurements could be life threatening to them.

To use one of these machines you should always wash and dry your hands thoroughly first and then use the lancet to prick a fingertip. It is a good idea to then hold your hand downwards and hold the pricked finger until a small drop of blood appears, then catch the blood with the test strip. Then you follow the instructions of your monitor for inserting the test strip into the meter. After you have your results and you have recorded it you then will know how much insulin you need to give yourself.

Your instructions will also tell you how to clean and store your meter. Make sure that you do follow these instructions, as it is important to have your monitor working in perfect order every time.

Finding quality monitors to suit your individual needs is quite easy. You have the option of buying one through the medical center you are already dealing with or you can take a look online at the many companies that sell direct to you.
